We had earlier distributed a KPA tariff that came into effect on 1st December 2012. IT included amongst other changes a charge system for stevedoring/shorehandling/wharfage for self-propelled vehicles that is per type of unit and not per CBM. Apparently after implementation, the CFS (who handle all self-propelled vehicles on behalf of KPA) complained that the charges were too small especially for big industrial vehicles (trucks, construction equipment, road building equipment etc.) so a revision was proposed and approved by the board of KPA. Unfortunately no notice was given on this so it was only discovered when the CFS started charging the new rates. Mr. Charles Kisewa of KPA apologized in an official communication for not properly notifying their clients (clearing agents, forwarders and importers/exporters). We hope this is now rectified.
It’s important to note that for vehicles above 5MT the charges are significantly higher even more so for vehicles above 10MT. This includes trucks, buses, bulldozers, excavators etc. etc. Also the equipment for UN missions which we frequently move has a lot that falls in this category. It is important to take this into consideration.
